The Poor Patient Fund
The idea of the programme is built on the coverage of the costs of medical services which are not available in the public health sector and whose costs are too high in the private sector. This makes it difficult for poor patients and those with chronic conditions to obtain. It then pushes them to submit to the illness and its complications of inability, disability or even death in some instances and this is due to the lack of availability of funds
From here stems the importance of launching a patient assistance programme to ease the burden on needy patients. That is attainable by helping them as much as possible by providing for the cost of the following health care services as a basic human right to the wealthy and destitute:
PHYSICAL THERAPY
Costs of rehabilitation services and physical therapy for the disabled and elderly and enrolling them in a rehabilitation program.
MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS
Payment of laboratory and radiological examination bills.
SURGICAL PROCEDURES
Costs of specialised surgical procedures (heart and vascular operations, fractures and reconstructive surgery, organ transplants, etc.)
MEDICATION AND PHARMACOLOGY
Contribution to the purchase of medicines not available in the public health sector, especially for patients with chronic diseases, cancer, kidney failure and hepatitis.
EXPOSURE & CONSULTATION
Prescription of exposure and consultation when poor patients are in need of specialists and experts.
HOME CARE
Provision of home-based care for the disabled and elderly.
Areas covered by the Fund
The program aims to serve poor patients wherever they may be, especially in disaster and crisis areas. This is done through reliable health organisations and through the health department. Currently we serve Lebanon, Palestine (Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza) and Syria. The hospitals and health centres presenting the services are still limited. Also, the pre-requisite of the program requires the patient to pay a certain amount according to his means so that the services are not abused.
