Dr. Usamah Akluk, head of the neurosurgery department in Shifa Hospital, said that the surgeons in his department are dealing with very serious injuries due to the occupation’s snipers which always aim to intentionally kill and cause disability to civilians participating in the Great March of Return, which began on the 30th March.

The neurosurgery consultant explained that the neurosurgery crew in Shifa Hospital are dealing with injuries that aim for the head, neck and backbones. These injuries aim to kill or cause quadriplegia or hemiplegia to the injured. This is done using live ammunition that does not give the medical crew an opportunity to save the injured.

Dr. Akluk explained that the neurosurgery crew, despite the serious and difficult injuries, was able to control a number of serious bleeds. He indicated that of the five cases accepted in the neurosurgery department since the 14th May, three were saved from death. Dr. Akluk clarified that the neurosurgeons in Shifa Hospital enjoy skills and high competence despite the scarcity of means and shortage of a number of medications and medical consumables. He called upon the conscience of the international community to work on providing basic needs to medical facilities in Gaza to ensure that they continue functioning
