The surgical cadre in Gaza’s hospitals are exposed to severe pressure in light of the accumulated injuries due to the occupation’s targeting of peaceful participants in the Great March of Return. There is an urgent need to perform emergency operations to save their limbs of dangerous injuries caused by explosive ammunition launched by the occupation forces towards them.

Dr. Mahmoud Matar, consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Shifa Hospital, described the pressure facing the surgeons in Shifa Hospital as surpassing the ability of any medical cadre in the world. He emphasised that the medical cadre is being exposed to great strain of strength and resources in light of the large amount of injuries reaching Shifa Hospital and a large number of them requiring operations to be performed.

For his part, Dr. Adnan Barsh, consultant orthopaedic and joint surgeon, described the conditions of the injured arriving at Shifa Hospital as difficult cases, and not the usual injuries caused by live bullets which do not usually cause this much injury to the entry and exit wounds. These injuries cause shattering of bone, veins, arteries and nerves.

Regarding our question about the severe pain being suffered by the injured and the possibility of easing their pain, Dr. Barsh explained that the medical crew in the operation rooms are suffering a great shortage in analgesia, anaesthetic agents, antibiotics and fracture stabilisers. This increases the heavy burden carried by the medical cadre in the operating rooms.

The surgical cadre called for a provision of support through specialist surgical cadres and a quick supply of the necessary medication, analgesia and antibiotics to hospitals so that they may save who they can save.
