The 22nd stage of the Kidney Transplant Programme has begun in the Gaza Strip. Dr. Abdul Qadir Hammad, consultant and head of the organ transplant unit in Royal Liverpool University Hospital in Britain, arrived to Gaza this morning. He is to oversee four kidney transplants on kidney failure patients being conducted in Shifa Hospital, Gaza City. This signifies the 22nd stage of the Kidney Transplant Programme with the Poor Patient Fund in the Gaza Strip, which aims to train the local surgeons in government hospitals so that kidney transplants may be conducted by local surgeons in the future. This is through a complete programme for kidney transplants that began in 2012. The total number of patients who had transplants since the inception of this project until now is 69. Worthy of note is that the Poor Patient Fund - South Africa offers a number of health and medical services to patients in the Gaza Strip.
